Personal Life Before Films:
John Abraham was born in the city of Mumbai, to a father who had a Syrian Christian lineage and a mother who is a Parsi. So John, whose birth name was Farhan, had spent his childhood among a unique blend of cultures. His father, an architect by profession, was from Aluva in Kerala and his mother is an extraordinary woman who is keenly interested in works of charity. Due to the difference in their backgrounds, his parents had to elope from their respective families in order to spend their lives together. The name ‘John’ was given to the actor by his father, and this is the name that he uses till date. He also has a younger brother by the name of Alan.
John completed his schooling from the ‘Bombay Scottish School’. He got a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from there. The actor was always a good student, never slipping out of his class’ top 15 students. Later, he completed his MBA from the ‘Mumbai Educational Trust’.
Apart from his education, the other interesting fact about John’s childhood was his keen interest in sports. He was not only the captain of the soccer team in his school, but he was also a champion in the 100m and 200m races. On top of all this, the actor took Tae Kwon Do lessons under his master and trainer, Javed Khan. So, the birth of John Abraham’s awareness about fitness and exercise occurred in the actor’s childhood itself.
Life After College:
John did not join films right after college. His first notable work in the Indian entertainment industry included featuring in a music video called ‘Surma’, of the famous Punjabi artist, Jazzy B. This helped him catch the eyes of the Indian audience. Later he had been a part of the ‘Time And Space Media Entertainments Promotions Ltd.’ When the company closed down due to some financial issues, John started to  work with a company called ‘Enterprise Nexus’ and that too, as a media planner. But John Abraham’s heart did not lie in this job. His lucky moment came when he entered his name in the well known ‘Gladrags Manhunt Contest’.
Luckily for him the management of the contest allowed him to enter even though he had almost been too late.  As luck would have it, John went on to win this famed contest. He was sent off to participate in the international version of this particular competition in Philippines. There too John’s extraordinary talent shone through and he bagged the title of First Runner-Up. It is no surprise that he was flooded with modelling offers after that. His work was not limited to India. He worked in London, Singapore, New York, Hong Kong and such other cities. He did a number of other notable commercials and music videos. Finally, Kohn decided it was time to hone his acting skills in order to make a place for himself in Bollywood. So, with this thought in mind, Abraham joined ‘Kishore Namit Kapoor’ acting institute. Here he took lessons in acting, along with continuing his career in modelling.
John Abraham’s Acting Career:
John debuted in Bollywood with the film ‘Jism’ in 2003, where he was cast opposite Bipasha Basu. This film was a romantic thriller. Though the film was a bit above average when it came to box-office collections, but it put the limelight on John. He audience and the rest of Bollywood took note of this new actor with striking looks. Next came the films ‘Saaya’, ‘Paap’ directed by Pooja Bhatt and ‘Lakeer – Forbidden Lines’, by Ahmed Khan. None of these films could do much for the actor’s career, though he was considered to be a promising new face.
The next film that he did was ‘Dhoom’ in 2004, produces by the famous ‘Yash Raj Films’. This film offered John the role of Kabir, the film’s main antagonist. Not only did the film do extremely well at the box office, it made everyone sit up and admire John Abraham’s work. Next came the films ‘Garam Masala’ and ‘Kaal’. Both of these were quite successful. His next film saw John working with Deepa Mehta. ‘Water’ was a very interesting film which dealt with the condition of the Hindu widows, under the British Rule. The actor received a lot of praise for his role and the film itself was nominated for the ‘Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film’ in 2006.
In 2006 itself John did four more films. These were ‘Zinda’, ‘Baabul’, ‘Taxi No.9211’ and ‘Kabul Express’. Of them, the last two did reasonably well. After this, John did ‘Salam-E-Ishq’ directed by Nikhil Advani. Though the film was received coldly by the Indian audience, it did relatively well abroad. The next two films that we saw John in, were ‘No Smoking’ and ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’, in the year 2007.
In 2008, John acted in the hit film ‘Dostana’ with Abhishek Bachchan along with actress Priyanka Chopra. The next film ‘New York’ that was based on the tragedy of 9-11 (11th September) in U.S.A. and how it affected the lives of three friends living there, did quite well too.
After this came the films like ‘Aashayein’, ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’ and ‘Force’. All these films received a more or less positive response from the audience. His next and most recent film was ‘Desi Boyz’ with Akshay Kumar. Unfortunately, the film did not do too well.
Upcoming Projects:
We will be able to see John in ‘Housefull 2’, ‘Race 2 and ‘Dostana 2’ this year.
Plus Points:
It was easy for John to get noticed for his unique name. Topping that off, the actor has a unique blend of looks. Even with his impeccable height and well muscled body, his image is not over powering. That is all thanks to his attractive smile and ‘much-talked-about’ dimples. When he first entered the entertainment industry, he got popular very easily because of these attributes.
Other Attributes:
He is highly involved with PETA and is very supportive towards social causes. Apart from having his own group or brigade by the name of ‘Habitat For Humanity’, which is originally a project by Jimmy Carter, the actor plays an important role in encouraging others to be part of such activities.
